Rosuva...

I have been on 5mg rosuva now for around 6 weeks, having swapped from 40mg of simvastatin. The pins and needles in my hands at night have stopped which is great, but I am finding I have palpitations at night when I take my rosuva.
I had a fasting test a few days before Christmas to check my levels on this new drug and should get my results tomorrow. I am not sure if I will still have lowish levels due to the simva - does anyone know how long the tablets keep working after you stop taking them? Does it take a while for your levels to return to their pre-med state? I don't expect 5mg simva to be as potent at 40mg simva, I have a total cholesterol of 2 at the moment (test in october) and pre-med it is almost 15.

I have only connected the palpitations and med use in the last few days so I am going to see if it happens again tonight and if it does I will stop taking it and contact my Consultant...
I hope everyone has had a good Christmas, I have certainly over indulged - all the usual suspects, cheese, cream, chocolates, alcohol.... roll on the New Year and another attempt at healthy living!

I had a search around because I couldn't remember and it seems that 30 days is the minimum time waited before testing for a simvastatin-free measurement. My consultant waited 2 months, I think. I don't think it's the tablets still working (the half-life is only 2 hours) but more the body taking time to reestablish its normal levels.

I feel a bit jealous - I don't think I've over-indulged on anything, but then, do I really want to? After all, it's mostly about poultry and fruit at this time of year, isn't it?

I hope you get it sorted soon and enjoy a happy New Year!

Thanks DakCB-UK,
I have just been to collect my results but the receptionist won't give them to me and tells me 'You need to speak to the Dr... nothing to worry about....blah, blah, blah' I told her my non medicated level is over 14 and I hope its not that high again, she looks blankly at me and says 'like I said it says here you need to see the Dr...we don't have any appointments at the moment'

So I don't know how high my levels are but will try and get an appointment tomorrow. I am fast regretting the cheese, cream....

If you like strong cheese, have you tried the Wyke Farms Super-Light Cheddar in the hot pink wrapper? The texture is a bit wrong (slimy exterior) but the taste is spot on and the story on the packet is interesting.

My worst sin was about 15 Pringles straight off, but I had just come back from Ikea with daughter and boyfriend and four bookcases.
I know they call Rosuvastatin the "gorilla statin" as it is more potent. I couldn't tolerate 10mg but I don't have a good tolerance level. It gave me an asthmatic type cough which returned when I mixed the after effects of fibrates with atorvastatin. That has taken about two weeks to go completely.

Don't they recommend two months as a total clear out time for drugs. I know my levels were back to pre medication levels by 3 months.
I think you can take rosuvastatin at any time of the day...I'm just wondering if taking it at a different time would make any difference.

Your TC of 2 sounds a bit drastic, did your consultant recommend that ? (Please note, I'm not a doctor!)

My Consultant was very happy with all of my levels at my last appointment (I was starting to worry in case they were too low). I am anxious to know what they are now, and I am kicking myself for not being more persistent and insisting she told me (which they usually do).

I think after a trip to Ikea, 15 Pringles is forgivable!!

Scores are in: total cholesterol 5.1, HDL 1.08, triglyceride 4.1, ratio 4.9 so definitely on the up, will see what the lipid Dr says....

That don't add up to me. No LDL?

Informed patient comment thinks those results are OK...maybe your triglycerides are still a bit high but I would be happy with that.
Do you mind me asking if you were a bit concerned when your TC was 2 ? It's just that I have never heard of a level as low as that. Fellow bloggers will know that I have a "thing" about this manic desire to lower TC to ever lower levels with higher doses of statins.
Is there any scientific evidence that very low levels are desirable? Is there any evidence that very low levels of cholesterol cause adverse effects? Cholesterol is a vital part of our cells....how low can we go?

My experience of low TC due to statin therapy is all the evidence I need: I felt awful, emotionally, physically and sexually. So I'm back to taking my chances again with TC in double figures, but feeling great for it!

Not sure why they didn't take my LDL but results were not there, Dr said LDL result not asked for??

I was concerned when my level was 2 but my consultant seemed very happy with it - I am currently researching 'safe low levels'.

Mish, I dont blame you for coming off the statins of they make you feel so bad, its an individual thing I guess and you have to decide what works best for you.

Seems a bit odd not giving you LDL results, isn't that the one that everybody's interested in?
Don't they calculate LDL using a complicated equation as it is expensive to measure it directly?

I thought it was simply Total - HDL - Triglycerides = LDL... which is why I don't understand the numbers above. Triglycerides of 4.1 seems remarkable when I think the normal range is 2 or less.

I was on Atorvastatin which mucked up my liver function & iron levels, so the Consultant put me on 5mg Rosuvastatin, but suggested I take it every other day which has worked fine for me. I am now post PCI(stents) and getting back to full fitness. My cholesterol has dropped from 7.8 to 5.1, but I have cut out cheese, cream & crisps - its easier for me to cut them out completely than tempt myself, but this was hard at family Christmas parties!
